This past weekend was a big one for Hitchin-based triathlon club Team Trisports as eight of its athletes took on the epic challenge of the Ironman European Championships – held in Frankfurt, Germany.
Taking place over a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and 26.2 mile full marathon run, it was once again Gavin May, a two-time Kona qualifier, who finished first for the club in a superb time of 10:30:40.
On a day when four out of the seven athletes recorded a new personal best time, it was Richard Thomas who came home second for the club, smashing his previous best time in the processs, to stop the clock at 11:37:51.
Mark Young, also setting a new PB , rounded out the club’s top three in 11:55:19.
Making her debut over the Ironman distance, Kate Turner put on a great show to set a fantastic sub twelve hour time of 11:57:43.
Next home, Shawn Reader and Drew Lowrie completed the PB quartet with great times of 12:03:26 and 12:26:19 respectively.
And finally, Stuart Sprawson also made his Ironman debut in Frankfurt and finished in 12:49:10 whilst misfortune on the bike leg meant that fellow debutant Dave Welch was forced to retire out on the course.
Also competing over the same mind-blowing distance, but this time on home soil, Sam Tophill took on The Outlaw Iron Distance Triathlon and crossed the line in a time of 12:50:36.
And finally, Helen Shulver took part in the Hathersage Hilly – a triathlon that lived up to its name – and finished an excellent 7th female overall for the 420m pool swim, 20km bike and 7km run in 1:33:35.
