TOP 10 FOR SUPER STEVE!

 

Elite athlete and member of Hitchin-based Team Trisports, Stephen Harrison, secured a superb result at the weekend by coming 10th overall in the elite event of the GE Strathclyde Park Triathlon.

The sprint event, which consisted of a 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run, saw Harrison finish less than three minutes behind race winner and 2006 World Champion and double Olympian Tim Don.

Elsewhere, four athletes from the club took on the challenge of Ironman Lanzarote, considered by many to be the toughest Ironman in the world.

First to cover the epic race distance of 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and 26.2 mile run was Rob Wilson, who’s had a love/hate relationship with the race over the years and has finally got the result he deserved with a great time of 10:48:17.

Chris Suckling took on his second ever Ironman and recorded a time of 13:39:21 in the process, whilst veteran Richard Melvern crossed the line in 14:32:36 to finish 4th in his age-group.

Also competing was Mark Grayson, who had the misfortune to be struck down by illness on the flight out to the race and as a result had to retire after the bike leg of the race.

Competing over the Half-Ironman distance, three athletes raced the Emberton Grand Prix on the same weekend.

First home for the club was Gary Smith, who set a lightning fast time of 4:45:54 to finish 32nd overall, followed by Richard Thomas in 5:21:55 and Drew Lowrie in 5:37:01.

Dil Wetherill raced the Eton Half Distance triathlon and finished 6th in the M45-49 age-group with a time of 1:14:28 to keep his Beijing age-group world championship hopes firmly on track.

Also racing the Eton Half distance triathlon, but in the non Beijing qualifying event, Mark Harris finished a superb 2nd in the 25-29 age-group and 14th overall with a time of 1:16:19

Veteran athlete Kevin Bradley secured a new PB time of 1:24:16 at the Bedford Sprint on Sunday to finish 69th out of 164 finishers.

Last Thursday saw Gary Smith in action once again; this time at the Silverstone Duathlon, where finished a fantastic 7th overall for the 2 mile run/12 mile bike/2 mile run event.

Four athletes were also in action at Edinburgh Marathon, where Elodie Levis led the way with a great time of 3:39:57, closely followed by partner Steve Moakes in 3:40:04. Also racing were Mark Beaver (3:43:47), Paul Dutton (4:19:02) and Alyson Sprawson, whose time was unavailable at the time of going to press.

And finally, ten members took on the North Road Hard Riders 25 mile cycling time trial at the weekend.

Finishing first for the club was Steffan Ford in an excellent time of 1:02:42, followed by Simon Shaw in 1:06:07 and Chris Priestley in 1:08:56.
Also competing were; Keith Cockburn (1:10:45), Tony Shortland (1:12:16), Joel Farrow (1:12:26), Mike Russell (1:13:18), Naomi Woodland (1:13:48), Sophie Gore (1:18:31) and Anna Priestley (1:22:19).
