MACKERNESS MOTORS TO TOP 5 FINISH

The weekend’s good weather gave athletes from Hitchin based triathlon club FVS TRI the chance to flex their muscles at both triathlon and cycling specific events.

First up; Ian MacKerness set an awesome time of 1:58:51 to finish 5th overall at the Milton Keynes Open Triathlon on Sunday. The Olympic distance event, which consisted of a 1500m swim, 40km bike and a 10km run, also saw great improvements from Steven Moakes, who narrowly missed out on a sub-2:30 time, to finish in 2:30:35 and partner Elodie Irving, who recorded 2:37:52.

Also on Sunday, Darren Greene competed in the New Forest Middle Distance Triathlon and set a commendable time of 5:55:00 over the challenging race distance of 1.9km swim, 90km bike and 21km run. Greene’s time saw him finish 99th out of the 400 competitors who entered. Sam Tophill finished in 181st with a time of  6:23:09 for 4th female vet40.

On Saturday, six athletes took to the start line of The Stevenage Cycling Club 2-Up Time Trial. The event, which consists of two riders working together to set the fastest time possible over a 12 mile course, took place in almost perfect conditions and saw the pairing of James Bedford and Chris Penfold finish first for the club in a time of 31:45. Next across the line were the husband and wife team of Richard and Lynn Allen; whose time of 33:28 was just eleven seconds ahead of the final pairing of Ryan Johnson and Stevan Allison, who clocked a time of 33:29.
