Harrison flies

Inclement weather conditions didn’t prevent athletes from Hitchin based triathlon club FVS TRI taking part in a variety of events over the weekend.

First up; Elite athlete Stephen Harrison finished an impressive 11th in the Strathclyde Park Elite Triathlon on Sunday. The race, which doubled up as the British Championships for the Olympic distance of 1500m swim, 40km bike and 10km run, saw a highly competitive field take part including Beijing Olympian Will Clarke. Stephen’s time of 1:56:59 included a lightning-fast run split of 32:35, the 5th fastest of the day, on a course that is set to be the venue for the triathlon at the Commonwealth Games in 2014.

Making her comeback from serious injury; Nina Pitcairn took part in a wet and windy Eton Super Sprint Triathlon on Sunday finishing in a time 1:28:33.

Ironman Legend  Gavin May and Jane Chappell competed in the Norlond 50m TT as part of their continuing build up to forthcoming Ironman races. Gavin clocked a brilliant time of 1:59:18 to finish in 6th place overall. He now heads out to compete in this weekend’s Ironman Lanzarote; considered by many to be the toughest Ironman event of them all. Jane recorded a time of 2:27:08 for 25th place and 2nd female ahead of her first Ironman later this year.

Bike coach Alex Turner was also in two-wheeled action on Sunday; this time taking part in the High Wycombe 25m TT. His time of 1:00:46 saw him secure 27th place overall.

And finally; Steffan Ford, Mark Grayson and James Foy continued the cycling theme by competing in the Ashwell CC Primavera Road Race. The large group racing proved an exciting and eye-opening debut for Steffan and James; who got to experience firsthand the speed and power of a peleton. Foy impressed in his first road race; finishing with the main bunch.
