BRITISH CHAMPIONSHIP MEDAL FOR FVS TRI
Newest recruit to FVS TRI Richard Melvern won a bronze medal in the 60-64 age group at the British Duathlon Championships at Ashbourne. He completed the 12k run, 40k bike, 4k run in a time of 2:37:12 and described it as the toughest Duathlon ever! Richard has recently joined Hitchin based FVS TRI to take advantage of the excellent training programme offered by the Club and as a seasoned GB Age Group competitor he brings a wealth of experience to the Club.
INTER CLUB CHALLENGE
Many first timers competed for FVS TRI in the inaugural inter club challenge with St Albans based tri club Tri-Force at the University of Hertfordshire Sports Campus in Hatfield. The early start was not enough to put of the new recruits who all met at 06:30am together with 18 club volunteers who ensured the event ran smoothly.
Mark Racher was first home for the men and second overall and Kerri Renshaw was first for the ladies, winning the ladies race overall. Not bad for a pair who mainly race over the Ironman distance and are used to racing for nearer 10 hours than just over the 1 hour it took to finish this event. The race was a 400m swim in the University pool, 12 mile bike course and a 5k run. Tri-Force won the overall challenge but Chairman Keith Perry was delighted with how well the event went and challenged Tri-Force to a return match over the Club Duathlon training course later in the year. The challenge was accepted by multiple Ironman Tri-Force Chairman Howard Davis, who incidentally lives in Hitchin!

Husband and wife team Alyson and Stuart Sprawson won the “couples” race beating the Tri-Force husband and wife duo by over 3 minutes combined!
OTHER RACE NEWS
Mark Robertson finished 25th overall in the Peterlee Sprint Triathlon over 400m swim, 20k bike and 5k run. Being a former student in the North East, Mark returned to his recent roots to compete against former club members. Although pleased with the overall result he is focussing on the Middle Distance Events this year culminating in the UK Half Ironman and so was a bit shocked at the speed of the event!
Mike Diggins was 6th in the first race of the Hillingdon Summer Duathlon Series based on the traffic free cycle circuit. He recorded a time of 42:29 for the 2 mile run, 10 mile bike, 1 mile run race format.

FLM Weekend
8 members of FVS TRI tackled the Flora London Marathon with Kevin Sambridge first home in his debut marathon in a super time of 3:06:20. In last place for the Club was Ed Corbett in 5:25:26 although he was chained to 16 people and succeeded in breaking the World Record for the most number of people chained together to compete a marathon! The heat was the main feature of the day with most members running slower than they hoped, most likely due to environmental conditions rather than lack of training!

Top FVS TRI cyclist Alex Turner rode the Team Cambridge 25 Mile TT in a respectable time of 1:02:21 which was good enough for 14th overall. Not bad considering he also rode too and from the event for extra training!

In a busy weekend Hitchin based triathlon and multi sport club FVS TRI competed in 3 Duathlons (run/bike/run),aquathlon (swim/run), triathlon (swim/bike/run) a marathon and a cycle time trial!
Duathlon
Kerri Renshaw was first home for FVS TRI in the Cambridge Duathlon over the 7.5k run/40k bike/7.5k run multi event in a time of 2:17:30. With the event also hosting qualification for the European and World Duathlon Age Group Championships the event attracted a quality entry of over 300 athletes. Lesley Dutton achieved the qualifying status in the women’s veteran race and will represent GB in the 45-49 age group in Edinburgh at the European Championships later in the year. Jackie Perry took the silver medal in the 45-49 age group with a time of 2:29:33 and Robbie Laughton was first home for the men in 2:20:51

Andy Mussett and Sean Bradley competed in the National Junior Duathlon Championships in Warwickshire over 5k/24k/2.5k. Andy was first home in a time of 1:14:57 for 25th in age group with Sean finishing in 1:21:02 for 27th
Mike Diggins was 5th Vet and 23rd overall at the Dorney Lakes F3 Duathlon in a time of 1:15:28 for the 5k/20k/5k run/bike run event
Aquathlon
Ellie Burton won the Ladies Luton Aquathlon swim run event in a time of 32:39 for the 400m swim and 5k run
Triathlon
John Burgess was 4th in his category at the Sevenoaks Triathlon over 400m / 27km / 8km in a time of 1:29:50 which placed him 18th from 223 finishers
Cycle Time Trial
Jon Gillham competed in a 25 mile TT at Duxford against national champion Michael Hutchinson. Finishing in 1:03:21, Jon was pleased to be only 10 minutes behind the champion!
Running
Mike Utton completed the Paris Marathon in a time of 3:19

WELWYN HILLY 50k TT
The Good Friday Welwyn Hilly 50k TT attracted a recorded a record entry of 142 cyclists this year boosted by the support of Hitchin based triathlon club FVS TRI who always endeavour to support local events. With 48 entries and 42 finishers, the FVS TRI colours were everywhere on the 50k loop from Welwyn through Hitchin and back to Welwyn.
Featuring top riders from local clubs and sponsored teams, FVS TRI were pleased to be rewarded not only with the largest turnout but also with the 3rd team prize behind Verulam CC who took 1st and 2nd team prizes. The FVS TRI trio were led by Alex Turner in a PB of 1:22:30, a return to form with a 13 minute improvement on 2006, top triathlete Steve Harrison (1:23:01)and Mark Racher (1:23:11)who recently returned to the Club to focus on the Ironman event with FVS TRI coach Gavin May.
Top veteran performance was from Ian Mackerness in 1:23:42 and top female was Penny Wylie in a PB of 1:38:20, over 7 minutes faster than her previous best.
John Burgess made a stunning debut on the course with a 1:23:58 which was good enough for 27th in a quality field won in 1:15:14. Other notable first time performances were from Robbie Laughton (1:31:00), Mark Shoobert(1:35:44) Mark Robertson (1:36:58) Marc Trussell (1:38:56) Mike Russell (1:39:01) Mark Young (1:39:24), Rob Bester (1:42:24) and senior club member Chris Penfold 1:44:25 who was delighted with his performance.
PB performances were prompted by near perfect conditions from Alex Turner,Steve James, Michael Clark, Bradley Baynham, Ian Hobbs, Penny Wylie and Pete Timmins. In a sport dominated by male entries the Club were also delighted to field 7 of the 11 female finishers.

In busy Easter weekend Pete Timmins also went on to race the Belvoir Half Marathon and recoded his second PB of the weekend with a 1:52:41
Pete Eames was also competing in Welwyn on Good Friday at the Gosling Stadium Herts Phoenix Open Track Meet. Pete recorded a PB in the 800m with a 2:35.1 and also later ran the 1500m in 5:24.3
Simon Patenall travelled to Fylde in Lancashire to compete in a series of 4 Easter Weekend events totalling the marathon distance. He was 15th overall and 5th senior male in times of 39:53 for the 6 mile Blackpool Road Race, 21:36 for the 4.2 mile St Annes Beach Run, 39:18 Blackpool Cross Country and a 68:18 PB for the Fleetwood 10 Mile Road Race

FVS TRI’s Andy Musset won the Series Junior Title with a victory in the final Milton Keynes Winter Duathlon. Andy has established himself as the leading Club Junior in 2007 and was 3rd overall for the club with a time of 1:07:28 for the 4.5k run/16k bike/4k run based around the Milton Keynes Bowl. First home for the Club was Mike Russell in a time of 1:06:12 in 31st place in his first competitive duathlon. Close behind was Mike Diggins in 1:06:59. Also making their first appearances in a multi discipline event were Gerry Corrance in 1:09:40 and Greg Evans with a time of 1:14:18. Other times Chris Baxter 1:09:19 Richard Easterbrook 1:10:42 Pete Timmins 1:12:09 Drew Lowrie 1:12:29 Kevin Bradley 1:15:13 Top FVS TRI female triathlete Kerri Renshaw was 2nd female in a time of 2:06:11 for the popular Dragon Slayer Duathlon over 3mile run/20mile bike and 5 mile run held at a new venue based around Upminster having moved from the Eastway Cycle Track which makes way for the London 2012 Cycle Facility. Kerri will now build towards the Weymouth Middle Distance Triathlon in 6 weeks, hoping to go one better than her 2nd last year as she then moves her focus to Ironman UK in September. 3 FVS TRI members tackled the Oakley 20 Miler in preparation for the London Marathon. Steve Chalk was an excellent 1st MV50 in 2:12:31 and 21st from over 900 finishers. Chris Yuill finished in 2:44:33 and Tony Shortland was delighted with his 2:54:15
