On a day when many of the club’s athletes hit top form, Harrison led the way with a blistering finish time of 1:51:20 for the Olympic distance race – including a 32:54 10km run split.

Also competing at the race, Charles Harris clocked a rapid 2:09:57 to finish 32nd overall; followed by Pete Ryan in a time of 2:15:34.

There were also great performances from the Team Trisports Development Squad; as Gemma Sargent finished first of the club’s female entrants, and in the process recorded her second consecutive sub-2:20 finish to record a new fastest time of 2:17:54. Fellow member Katy Jinks also recorded a PB to lower her best ever Olympic distance time to 2:20:49. And Simon Douglas went below 2:30 for the first time to smash his previous best time by over seven minutes to record 2:23:21.

Also recording his first sub-2:30 finish, Rob Davies set an excellent time of 2:21:48 to go miles under his previous benchmark time.

There was also some great veteran performances, as Mark Young and Jackie Perry clocked 2:30:00 and 2:31:30 respectively.

A little further afield, two athletes from the club travelled abroad to compete in the 2010 Ironman Switzerland event, also on Sunday.

Finishing the epic race distance of 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride and 26.2 mile marathon run in a fantastic time of 10:26:58, Adam Laycock continued to enjoy his magnificent season as he added the aforementioned result to his club championship victories. And producing a PB time for the distance, Sam Tophill crossed the line in a time of 12:47:03.

Racing the 70.3 format of Ironman, Helen Shulver competed in the Ironman 70.3 Antwerp on Sunday and covered the race distance, which is exactly half that of a full Ironman, in a great time of 5:15:44

Nearer to home, Tony Shortland competed in the age-group event that supported the London round of the Dextro Energy World Championship series in Hyde Park on Saturday and clocked a great time of 1:22:38 for the sprint distance race to just miss out on a top ten age-group finish.

Rob Wilson showed his raw pace at the Boundary Breeze Sprint Triathlon on Sunday to finish the 750m swim, 23km and 5km course in a super-fast time of 1:06:41 to finish 1st in the 40-44 age-group and a brilliant 6th overall.

Again over the sprint distance, Lee Thorp raced his second ever sprint triathlon at the Thame Triathlon on Sunday and crossed the line in a lightning-fast time of 1:04:08 to finish 5th in his age-group and 27th overall. Also competing was Brenda Bozwood-Davies who finished first in her age-group in a time of 1:27:56.

And finally; Dil Wetheril set a new PB time of 27:10 at the Hitchin Nomads Brierly 10m TT on Tuesday 29th July to average just over 22mph.

With the triathlon season now at its peak, athletes from Hitchin-based triathlon club Team Trisports were out in action once again at the weekend.

First up, Simon Shaw made his iron-distance debut at the famous Challenge Roth event on Sunday. And what a debut it was! Taking place over the epic race distance of 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike and 26.2 mile run, Shaw setting a phenomenal time of 10:20:49, including a 3:37:54 marathon run split and a finishing position of 518th overall out of more than 3200 starters. With crowds in excess of 100,000 lining the route, there was plenty of encouragement for Shaw as set about his awesome debut over the distance.

Also on Sunday, Team Trisports Development Squad athlete Steffan Ford (pictured) continued his strong season as he set a fantastic time of 2:12:50 at the Worthing Triathlon. The race, which forms part of the British Triathlon National Ranking Series, took place over the Olympic distance of 1500m swim, 40km bike and 10km run and saw Ford finish an excellent 40th overall and 8th in his age-group.

The day before, Kevan and Rachel Armstrong competed at the Big Cotswold Swim and set times of 48:06 and 1:03:57 respectively, with Kevan’s impressive time seeing him finish first in his age-group and 14th overall.

A week earlier, Andy Chatterton continued his off-road triathlon adventures at Xterra France. On what turned out to be an incredible challenging race course, Chatterton finished 15th in his age-group which should see him move back up into the top 5 in the European Standings

It really was a case of ‘Team’ Trisports last weekend as athletes from the Hitchin-based triathlon club travelled to Gosfield Park in Essex to compete in the British Triathlon Eastern Region Relays.

And ensuring club success on the day, Team Trisports Development Squad athletes Gemma Sargent and Katy Jinks finished in a superb 2nd place in the Women’s Open event along with team mate Kate Turner.

The event, which consisted of three person teams competing over a sprint distance race of 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run, provided a more social and relaxed atmosphere than the usual intense affair that comes with racing as an individual and allowed friends and family, as well as athletes, the chance to enjoy the occasion and the great weather the event was blessed with.

In fact, the weather proved so good that the race was declared a non-wetsuit swim - which provided a great moment of humour as a few hundred jaws collectively hit the ground upon hearing the announcement!

With the club submitting no less than 14 teams, there was plenty of opportunity to cheer on a team mate or loved one as the various teams, all named after an amusing World Cup theme, completed the swim-swim-swim, bike-bike-bike, run-run-run race format.

Despite the temperature and unfamiliar race format, everyone involved gave their all in what proved to be a fantastic day for all those involved in the Team Trisports set up.

On the same day, Rob Wilson raced at The Bananaman Triathlon at Dorney Lakes and finished a fantastic 6th overall out of more than 370 competitors and 1st in the 40-44 Age Group. Wilson’s time over the unusual race distance of 800m swim, 30km bike and 7.5km run was a lightning fast 1:34:33.

There was even more success on Sunday as Ian Mackerness finished 2nd overall at the Box End Sprint Triathlon in a great time of 1:13:02. Also competing were Andrew Chadwick (1:27:41) and Graham Perry (1:33:53).

A week earlier Rachel Armstrong raced at the Shropshire Olympic Distance Triathlon in blisteringly hot conditions and in the process achieved her ambition of once again qualifying for Great Britain Age Group representation. Setting a great time of 2:27:13, Armstrong not only qualified but also finished an excellent 5th in her Age Group.

It was a weekend of big occasions and big distances for athletes from Hitchin-based triathlon club Team Trisports as Sunday was dominated by two key events.

First there was the ETU Triathlon European Championship held in Athlone, Ireland that saw four club athletes represent Great Britain in the Olympic distance age-group race.

Finishing first for the club in a stellar time of 2:12:05, Steffan Ford, part of the Team Trisports Development Squad that receives equipment support from Letchworth based retailer Trisports, once again underlined his strong form this season by covering the 1500m swim, 40km bike and 10km run course in such a fast time.

Next across the line, Gemma Sargent, also a Development Squad athlete, made the most of her second age-group experience (having also raced at a duathlon age-group event in Rimini in 2008) to clock a time of 2:25:21.

And ensuring that the veteran members of the club were also represented, Chris and Anna Priestley also raced and set times of 2:36:30 and 2:55:21 respectively – with Anna’s time earning her a 4th place finish in the Female 55-59 age-group and 3rd Britain in her age-group.

From big occasions to big distances, nine athletes from the club took to the start line of the Big Cow Cowman middle distance triathlon on Sunday.

Finishing first for the club, and a highly impressive 22nd overall out of more than 500 competitors, Chris Baxter completed the 1900m swim, 92km bike and 21km run in a stunning time of 4:42:58, with Kate Turner the first female finisher for the club in a great time of 5:29:16.

Also competing were; Helen Shulver (5:33:32), Sam Tophill (5:47:56), Darren Greene (5:56:00), Gerry Corrance (6:09:17), Paul Dutton (6:27:09), Steve Allison (6:50:23) and Alyson Sprawson (7:06:48).

In the sprint version of the race, Steve Mussett finished the 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run in 1:29:22.

On Saturday, Brenda Bozwood-Davies raced the Timex Womens only Triathlon over the Sprint distance and finished in a time of 1:30:48

And finally, Mike Russell completed the last of the Dave Gudgin 25 mile TT series on Tuesday evening in a new PB time of 1:12:46.

Hitchin-based triathlon club Team Trisports were out in force at the Northampton Triathlon on Sunday as the race hosted the third and final round of their 2010 club championship.

Held over the Olympic distance of 1500m swim, 40km bike and 10km run the event course proved familiar to those who had competed at round one of the championship, as it was the same as venue, and saw the hottest day of the year matched by equally scorching performances from the 36 athletes taking part.

First up; defending champion and elite athlete Stephen Harrison, not competing in the club championship due to his elite status, finished a superb 2nd overall to add another podium finish to his 2009 victory. A blistering time of 1:53:38 saw Harrison finish just 10 seconds behind that of the race winner.

Turning to the club championship, all eyes were on Adam Laycock, the winner of the previous two rounds, to see if he could complete a hat-trick of victories and take an undefeated men’s title.

As it turned out, the presence of fellow veteran athlete and former elite racer Ian Mackerness meant that Laycock was denied a clean-sweep of championship victories; as Mackerness showed that he’d lost none of his Olympic distance pedigree to secure victory in a lightning-fast time of 2:06:5 and finish in 18th place overall.

There was plenty of consolation for Laycock however as he finished just one place behind in a time of 2:08:22 and with it secured the men’s title. The men’s podium was rounded out by Ironman specialist Gavin May who once again enjoyed a race long battle with Laycock to stop the clock just six seconds after in 2:08:28.

In the women’s race it looked to be much closer affair, with any one of three athletes capable of securing victory on race day. Whilst many were confident of predicting the top three finishers, the order was far from certain as the previous two rounds had seen some intensely close competition and a differing podium order each time.

Just as with the men’s race, there was a clear winner amongst the ladies with Gemma Sargent going below the 2:20 barrier for the first time and in the process taking the win. Kate Turner was next across the line in 2:24:44 to record three straight podium finishes. And in third place, Katy Jinks, deciding on a non-wetsuit swim, also made it three consecutive podium finishes with a time of with 2:26:13.

There was also considerable success for the club in the age-group competition with Sam Tophill, Lesley Dutton and Richard Melvern all securing wins in their respective age-groups. In the sprint race, held alongside the Olympic distance event, Brenda Bozwood-Davies also won her age-group.

And finally, the race marked the Olympic distance debut of Joel Farrow, who recorded a time of 2:34:01 in only his second ever triathlon.

This was Wetheril’s second consecutive victory at the event and having led out of the swim, the remaining 6k off road bike and 3k off road run were soon dispatched on his way to a finishing time of 26:55.

Team Trisports saw its elite athlete Stephen Harrison put in a truly stunning performance at the Nokia Windsor Triathlon on Sunday.

The event, which is considered one of the ‘big three’ on the British race calendar along with the London and Blenheim triathlons, celebrated it’s 20th anniversary this year and also proved a cause for celebration for Harrison as he finished a superb 4th place overall in the elite race, just 10 seconds behind the 3rd place finisher.

Taking place over a 1500m swim, 42km draft-legal bike leg and 10km run, Harrison’s outstanding time of 1:52:27 also included a fleet-footed 10k run split of 33:24.

Also on Sunday, Steffan Ford (see photo. Photo Credit: Mark Easter.) returned to his native Welsh roots to compete in the Cosmeston Sprint Triathlon and secured an excellent finishing position of 3rd overall. His great result was not only an improvement on his 5th place finish in last year’s race, but also lowered his PB time for the event by over two minutes to 1:06:12.

On the same day, but much nearer to home, there was more sprint distance action. This time from veteran athletes Graham Perry and Kevin Bradley. The pair competed at the Puretri Bedford Traktors Sprint Triathlon which consisted of a 400m pool swim, 24km bike leg and 5km two lap run and set times of 1:23:11 and 1:25:24 respectively.

Again on the sprint triathlon theme, Tony Shortland raced the Henley Sprint triathlon on Sunday and covered the 400m pool swim, 25km bike and 5k run in a time of 1:26:16 to finish 8th in his age-group.

Changing sports, Adam Laycock took to the startline of the Finsbury Park CC 50 cycling time trial on Sunday and set a new PB time of 2:02:14 to average an impressive 24.5mph for the event.

Also sticking to two wheels, Naomi Woodland raced the Unity Cycling Club 25 mile TT and set a time of 1:15:16 to finish 2nd lady and 3rd overall after handicap.

First up, Gemma Sargent secured a superb third place finish in her age-group at the Blenheim Triathlon on Sunday. The event, held over the sprint distance of 750m swim, 20km bike and 5km run saw Sargent, who is part of the club’s Development Squad system that sees selected athletes receive bike and equipment support from Letchworth-based multisport shop Trisports, set a great time of 1:19:55 at the iconic Blenheim Palace venue. Also competing at the famous race, Dave Welch finished in a time of 1:29:15.

Elsewhere, veteran athlete Adam Laycock continued his superb run of form this season by finishing third in the 40-44 age-group, and 17th overall, at the Weymouth Middle Distance Triathlon on Sunday. The 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and 13.1 mile run held no fear for Laycock, who covered the gruelling race distance in an outstanding time of 4:30:04.

Again on Sunday, nine athletes travelled to Emberton Country Park to compete in the British Sprint Triathlon Championships.

Finishing first for the club, Sean Bradley clocked a great time of 1:13:51 to finish ahead of team-mates Mark Young (1:16:10) and Chris Priestley (1:16:43). Next across the line, Anna Holden came home first of the club’s female competitors in a time of 1:17:23, closely followed by Steven Moakes in 1:17:44. Veteran athlete Jackie Perry used her early season marathon training to put in a good time of 1:20:42 to finish ahead of the club’s remaining competitors Elodie Irving (1:21:49), Tim Smith (1:22:02) and Anna Priestley (1:25:36).

Switching sports, Rob Wilson took to the start line of the Manchester Wheelers Open 50 mile TT at the weekend and set a great time of 2:06:30 and an average speed of 23.7mph in his first ever 50 mile TT on a rolling course layout and against a high quality field.

Preferring to keep his weekend endeavours water-based, Kevan Armstrong raced the 3.8km Box End Swim and set a new PB time of 57:43, an improvement of over four minutes on last year. Also taking part, Drew Lowrie swam the course in a time of 1:15:50.

A week earlier, Andy Chatterton raced at the Xterra European Championships in Sardinia, Italy. The Xterra event, which consisted of a sea swim, mountain bike and off-road trail run saw Chatterton have an eventful race. Despite soaring temperatures and a crash on the bike leg that left him bloodied and bruised, Andy still produced a strong finishing time of 3:33:35 and will now wish for better fortune at the next Xterra event in France on 11 July.

And finally, Mike Russell ran the Hatfield Broad Oak 10k and finished an excellent 81st out of 1276 finishers in a time of 38:37, just 2 seconds outside his 10k PB.

Nineteen athletes from the club competed in the second round of the Club Championship at The Beaver Triathlon on Saturday.

The race, a middle-distance event which featured a gruelling 1.2 mile swim, 54 mile bike ride and 13.1 mile run on one of the toughest triathlon courses in the country, saw a series of great performances from the club’s athletes, who had to contend with wet and windy weather conditions in addition to the challenging course layout.

Racing like a spring chicken, veteran athlete Adam Laycock finished first for the club for the second race running to make it two straight club championship victories. Posting a blistering time of 4:36:14, Laycock enjoyed a race long battle with Ironman specialist and fellow veteran Gavin May, who finished just over a minute behind in 4:37:39 to earn a well deserved second place finish. And also putting in a great performance, Simon Shaw rounded out the podium in third place with an impressive sub-five hour finish of 4:51:45.

Turning to the club’s female athletes, the same three women appeared on the podium as round one, but this time it was Kate Turner who finished first in a time of 5:19:34. Next across the line, Katy Jinks made the most of her great swim time to stop the clock at 5:27:29. In third place, Gemma Sargent, winner of round one, also dipped below five and a half hours on her way to a finishing time of 5:28:08. All three performances were all the more impressive as the race marked the first time any of them had competed in a middle distance event.

There was also a fantastic display of grit and determination from Ian Hobbs, who battled excruciating cramp throughout the bike and run legs of the race but still battled through to see the finish line, much to pride of his team-mates.

Also competing were: Pete Ryan (5:29:41), Chris Suckling (5:33:04), Helen Shulver (5:34:17), Simon Douglas (5:37:59), Drew Lowrie (5:44:24), Mark Beaver (5:49:41), Sam Tophill (5:51:24), Max Lepoutre (6:15:16), Darren Greene (6:15:16), Naomi Woodland (6:17:04), Mark Malone (6:20:55), Ian Hobbs (6:56:42), Gerry Corrance (6:05:05).

Deciding to take on a slightly less daunting challenge, three athletes from the club also competed in the ‘Little Beaver’ race that took place before the main event.

Held over the shorter Olympic distance of 1500m swim, 40km bike and 10km run, James Foy produced a fine display to set a time of 2:26:00 and a finishing position of 98th overall out of more than 600 competitors.

Just 41 seconds behind, Steffan Ford also produced a sub 2:30 time to cross the line in 2:26:41, with Rachel Armstrong setting a time of 2:46:03.

The final round of the Championship takes place on 27 June at The Northampton Triathlon and will be held over the Olympic distance.

On Sunday, Gary Grinham competed at the Fritton Lake Triathlon. Held over the Olympic distance, Grinham set a great time of 2:27:51 to record his first result for the club.

The race, which involved a very chilly 750m swim, windy 23km bike leg and off-road 5km two-lap run, saw some great perfomances from the 40 club athletes who competed on the day.

Finishing first for the club, Adam Laycock was a popular winner of the first round to the Club Championship and put in a cracking time of 1:12:21 to finish 43rd overall in what was a highly competitive field due to the fact that the race acted as an Age-Group qualifying event for no less than three different championships.

Also setting a great time, Steffan Ford clocked 1:12:52 to finish second for the club and get his Club Championship off to a flying start.

Rounding out the podium, Rob Wilson showed, along with Laycock, that age is no barrier to success as he set a time of 1:13:01 to also get his championship off to a great start.

Turning to the club’s female athletes, Gemma Sargent won the opening round of the women’s championship with a time of 1:22:26, followed by Kate Turner who crossed the line in 1:24:34. And overcoming a recent training accident and resulting injuries, Katy Jinks finished third female athlete for the club in a time of 1:25:16.
